Trying to categorize American singer, producer, and songwriter Brandi Carlile into a specific genre is a difficult task. Since her self-titled debut album in 2005, she has oscillated between folk, Americana, rock, art pop, and even classic rock.
While her most famous song, “The Story,” shifts from country-folk to a grunge chorus, she has become increasingly diverse over the years, trying out different styles and singing duets with acts such as Noah Kahan, Miley Cyrus, Lucius, and Dolly Parton. Even recording an entire duet album with Elton John.
With that in mind, it's certainly a statement when Brandi Carlile names her first solo album in four years “Returning To Myself.” It will be released on October 24 - and even the title track, a guitar ballad, sounds like a return to her roots, introspection, and self-discovery. The second single, “A War With Time,” is also a melancholic affair, but due to its sophisticated production and unusual drum rhythm, it still has a very intense drive. Carlile co-produced the album once again, but also brought highly respected and established names on board: Andrew Watt (who worked with the Rolling Stones on their comeback album “Hackney Diamonds”), Aaron Dessner (member of The National), and Justin Vernon, whom most people know and love as Bon Iver.
Brandi Carlile will be presenting her new album in Europe next year. An exclusive show on the tour schedule in Germany: she will be playing at the Mitsubishi Electric Halle in Dusseldorf on October 26.
